Dear Friend ,

If you or someone in your family has served in the Armed Forces, thank you for your service! I hope you enjoyed your Veterans Day.

In June, Fairfax County Public Schools hosted an Honors Event that acknowledged over 740 employees, including 74 finalists and 13 winners in 12 different award categories. As I stated to my Board colleagues shortly after, I would later invite the three FCPS Outstanding Educators who either teach or live in the Lee District to my office to recognize their achievements formally.

Congratulations to the following:

🍎 2021 Outstanding Elementary School Teacher: David L. Worst, Physical Education Teacher, Rose Hill Elementary School

🍎 2021 Outstanding New Elementary School Teacher: Amelia Kirsten Carr, Lee District resident, and Kindergarten Teacher, Bucknell Elementary School

🍎 2021 Outstanding New Principal: Alfonso G. Smith, Principal, John R. Lewis High School
It was an honor to have the Outstanding Educators, as well as the principals, Dr. King, and the School Board Members for Lee and Mt. Vernon District, join me in celebrating their accomplishments. During the one-hour gathering, honorees discussed student enthusiasm on returning to school, pandemic-related impacts on student performances, and student/teacher readjustment issues.

Thank you all for a wonderful event!

Also, last week I was interviewed by The Washington Business Journal, where I discussed how Lee District is addressing economic opportunity. I spoke about how the future Innovation Center will provide skills and training opportunities to our young residents.

November is Adoption Awareness Month!
November is Adoption Awareness Month, a time to celebrate adoptive parents for taking an extraordinary step in opening their hearts and homes to children in need of a safe place to call home! Did you know that there are children in foster care waiting for adoptive homes?

So many of these children have special needs, are over the age of 9, or are part of sibling groups that would like to find a permanent home together. Adoptive parents support children as they recover from past traumatic experiences so that they can thrive. Children like Adame, an adventurous, funny, creative, and curious 12-year-old boy, are hoping to connect with such a loving parent. Explore the path to becoming a foster or adoptive parent or email BeAFosterParent@fairfaxcounty.gov.
